Things to bear in mind:
- Buy the best gear you can afford, but remember also that you are probably still growing, and it's not sensible to spend a lot of money on gear that might soon be too small for you.
- Look after your feet. Your boots must be a good fit, and not rub blisters on your feet. To help avoid blisters, wear woolly socks, which repel moisture and help to keep your feet dry; wear two pairs of socks - thin ones inside, thicker ones outside. Use talcum poweder to keep your feet dry. Rub surgical spirit on your feet to toughen up the skin - do this every day for several weeks before a longer hike. Change your socks several times a day during an expedition.
